Elle Fanning’s “Meta” Role in Cannes Hit Sentimental Value

Joachim Trier’s film made its world debut at Cannes in May, winning the Grand Prix, and later had its U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.

On September 4, Sentimental Value premiered at TIFF, where Elle Fanning shared the personal significance of the project on the red carpet at Princess of Wales Theater.

Fanning plays Rachel Kemp, an American actress striving to be taken seriously, calling the experience “meta” as the film explores themes of generational trauma.

Fanning said many aspects of Rachel resonated with her and praised Joachim Trier for encouraging actors to infuse their personal experiences into performances.

She recalled her 2011 Super 8 role, noting how filming a “movie within a movie” at age 12 felt like early preparation for playing an actress in Sentimental Value.
